Filter email using Outlook

Q: Is it possible to have email from certain people delivered to specific folders?

A: Outlook Express calls mail filtering Message Rules. Netscape Messenger calls
it Message Filters. You set a condition, an action, and a destination. Your email
client then checks the server for incoming email and follows the rules you assign to
each condition. Rules are easy to set up.

Outlook Express

Go to Tools, Message Rules, Mail. Choose New.
In the section number one, choose the conditions for the rule.
For example, if you choose "Where the From Line Contains People,"
Outlook will select each email from a designated person, or group.
In the second section, you assign Outlook an action. Check
"Move it to the Specified Folder," and Outlook will automatically place
all email from the chosen person and place it in the designated folder.
The third section spells out each step of your rule. Any text that is
underlined can have more detail and can be edited. Click on the
text that says "contains people." A pop-up window appears.
You can either type the email address in the top field, or click on
Address Book to select one or more addresses. Click OK when
you are finished. You will see that the underlined text now contains
the email address you specified.
Next click on the text "specified folder." A window will pop
up that contains all your existing Outlook folders. You may
either select a folder or create a new one.
Finally, give the rule a name so that you can manage it in the future.
You will see your new rule with a check in front of it and a
description of what the rule does at the bottom. Any
time you wish to change the rule, just select it and choose Modify.

You may add all sorts of rules to Outlook Express, turning them on
or off when you choose. If you have a slow connection, you might want
to put size restrictions on your email so that large files are deleted or are
not downloaded. You can also block certain addresses from sending you mail.

Netscape Messenger

Follow these steps to set-up your filters.

Select Edit, Message Filters, New.
In the first section, name the filter.
In the second section, select the appropriate information.
Then select the action to be performed, such as move to a
folder, delete, or mark unread. If you are moving to a folder,
choose the appropriate folder. Then click okay.

You can create a new folder by selecting New Folder in the filter
section, or follow these steps.

Bring up Netscape Messenger.
On the Left-hand side, click on Local Mail once to highlight it.
Go to File and select New Folder.
In the "Name" box type in Spam (make sure "Local Mail" is selected
in the second box) and click on OK (or Create on the Mac).
Repeat steps 2 & 3 and name the folder Suspect (again, make sure
"Local Mail" is selected) and click on OK (or Create on the Mac).
